Dance Class for Beginners

A lot of people say to me that they don’t want to start dance lessons because they CAN’T dance. Well that’s kind of the point. You go to a class to learn, and a dance class for beginners is a great place to start!

Actually walking in the door is the hardest part and having someone else to support you is nice but not essential. You do not have to BYO partner, you’ll always find one at the dance class. Usually, in a beginners dance class the partners are rotated so everyone gets the opportunity to dance with a live human. This is also a great way to learn, and meet others in the dance class.

Dance Class for Beginners

The unexpected can be quite unnerving and especially when your experiencing something for the first time. Rest assured everyone else who walks into a dance class for beginners feels exactly the same. There are so many things to think about it’s sometime hard to even concentrate! The good news is, it gets easier every week.

Here are some tips on what to wear, what to bring and what to expect.

What to Bring

Comfortable, non slip shoes. Dance shoes are not necessary for a beginners class. In fact shoes that you have already worn in are advisable. You want to be able to move without worrying about slipping over.  Old sneakers or flats with no tread are perfect! You’ll need a bottle of water and even a towel if you’re a heavy sweater!

*Ladies: Wearing heels is not a good idea until you are familiar with the steps.

*Gents: Bring your A-Game, it’s not often there is more males than females!

What to Wear

Active wear is OK because you are certainly going to be sweaty. As there is some body contact when in dance hold (mainly through the arms and on the ladies back), it’s best to wear something with sleeves and for the ladies nothing that is backless (not just yet anyway). This way, you’ll keep your sweat to yourself.

*Ladies: be mindful of anything that is strapless and a full skirt (as you might show your knickers when you spin or slip out of your strapless bra!).

*Gents: Be sure to wear a clean shirt, deodorant and a little bit of hair product – the best dancers are always immaculately groomed and first impressions are everything.

What to Expect

You will probably walk out of the first class and not be able to remember a thing. Don’t worry the next week will be much easier and you’ll feel a lot more comfortable. There will be lots of information and you’ll only retain a small amount. The teacher will always encourage you to keep dancing and keep moving even if you are getting it all wrong. Don’t over think it and remember everyone else in the beginner class is also a beginner!

Once you’ve gotten through your first experience of a dance class for beginners I guarantee you’ll have fun, make friends and enjoy the process of learning to dance.

Happy dancing and good luck!
